I have too darn many DVDs

I just finished re-cataloging them, and if I’m counting right and have removed all the duplicate entries properly, well over 400 of them (I had an exact number there but have already noted duplicates and omissions).

A list, for the truly masochistic (or those who want to gloat that they’ve got even more) after the break. Actually, it’s mainly for family to make sure that any Christmas gifts don’t duplicate ones I already have.

If you need it, this is the coolest tool ever

We had a partition table wiped at work last night, and I had a hell of a time finding a tool to recover it.

Well, TestDisk does it, and it’s free/GPL. The commercial tool I sometimes use for partition stuff DID have the ability to recover deleted partitions or reconstruct the whole table but didn’t support ReiserFS.

The only downside is that the first version I tried (4.0) while it came on Knoppix (which was very handy) didn’t support current ReiserFS either (it did support Reiser 1 and 2). But the current version (5.5) does, along with a plethora of other file systems (but not XFS, at least not yet.)

Very much worth adding to your toolkit.

A personal note…

I turned 29 today. Woohoo! Well, maybe not, but at least I’m not 30 yet.

On other notes, the election is only a few days about 30 hours off, I found out my brother has a blog (also in the sidebar now), and I’ve been way too busy at work to update much. Just remember to go out and vote on Tuesday, if you haven’t already. (I went to early voting on Saturday, with Marie… took a half hour or so.)

Good old Yankee ingenuity…

A site for bidding on coding projects can’t be that bad, can it?

Yes, it can, if the coding projects are for classes, as pointed out in an email sent out to my former research group at UCSC.

I can’t decide if this is ingenious of the students in question, or a sign that the end is nigh.

Welcome, though there’s basically nothing here yet.

I’ve been meaning to start a blog/journal for a while now… this election is giving me an ulcer (only metaphorically, I *hope*), and the mailing lists and newsgroups I’m on have only a limited tolerance for off-topic speculation on the topic.

Similarly, I expect that by being able to just post things here, I’ll be passing on fewer junk forwards, whether humor or otherwise. We’ll see how that goes, and ditto for personal announcements and news.

I don’t honestly know whether this will be of any interest to anyone who doesn’t know me, either in person or online. I’ve just spent too much of this evening installing and tweaking WordPress to really write much, but as the subtitle will say if I can figure out what to change to have it display, we should be seeing “Random musings, justifiable rants, and occasional News of the Weird.” Keep tuned in.
