My new toy…

I bought a new PocketPC/Phone device this weekend, and switched to Sprint:

All-you-can-eat mobile IP access (email and web, mainly) is a very, very cool thing.

I still need a memory card for it (it’s got about 40mb of free storage on it’s own… *sigh* I remember when that would have seemed like a lot), and if I were *really* hardcore, I’d be posting this from it rather than my laptop. But hey, I’m getting there.

Matthew David Edel: 10/5/1941 – 12/5/1990

15 years ago today, my father passed away. It was half my life ago, within about a month of exactly. I don’t really really think about it most of the time, but for some reason I was reminded of it last night… I actually wrote this post then, and took it down because it didn’t feel right leaving it up. And now it’s back up.

I miss him, and I wonder what he’d think of my life today. I hope that my brothers and mom are hanging in there, and are spared being reminded of the milestone.

I don’t like Mondays…

Both true for me, and a good songto boot. (*)

Congratulations to Peter and Jane, whose wedding I was at this past weekend. I’m not sure whether it’s appropriate to post a photo or two here, but I may.

Also, for lack of a better place, here’s some interesting science news:
The key to fresh water: imitation spleen proteins

Burlingame, Calif.–The human spleen doesn’t get a lot of good press, but the Electronic Power Research Institute has come up with a spleen-inspired molecule that could expand the world’s water supply.

(* Does someone know a good spam/adware-free lyrics site? My usual approach to just finding the first on google tends to produce sites that are fine for me, but look like they’re full of crapware if you don’t have a good blocker. Also, geez, how many people have covered that song… the original WAS the Boomtown Rats one, right???)

What’s up with me, lately…

First, because it’s too cute to resist:
(from a mailing list I’m on.)

Other than that, not a lot of news. I’m back from a vacation that wasn’t, in the end, all that relaxing… though I will have got my AA Platinum renewed for another year once the miles post for the flight home. I’m not sure I’m going to bother next year; I’ve got the miles for Marie’s graduation trip, and I can’t help feeling that I’ve got better things to do with my life than travelling by myself (with company would help, I grant… perhaps someday, when Marie is done with school, or under other better circumstances.)

Slappy’s getting married this Saturday, which is really cool, though I am sad I will be missing a third weekend in a row out of town. Work is hectic; we have some deadlines coming up I have been procrastinating on finishing up rather badly, so I will be busy with that. Ah well.

If you’re really bored… some book/movie commentary follows.

One of those forwarded questionaires… becoming a blog-meme, perhaps?

> Your Friends and little known facts about them

Yes, it’s one of those stupid “fill in the blanks” forwards… so, of course, I am turning it into a wannabe blog meme.

To spare the rest of you, it’s after the break.

I have too many DVDs, redux

I just did an incomplete recount, and if I’m counting right and have removed all the duplicate entries properly, the total is around 550-600 of them (I had an exact number, but have already noted duplicates and omissions especially ones not ordered online).

A list, for the truly masochistic (or those who want to gloat that they’ve got even more) after the break. Actually, it’s mainly for family to make sure that any Christmas gifts don’t duplicate ones I already have.

Young men suffering from ‘early life crisis’

From the Times Online in the UK: Young men suffering from ‘early life crisis’

ONE in seven of Britain’s young men is anxiety ridden, according to a new report. Instead of enjoying their carefree twenties and thirties, men are racked with worry about employment issues, time pressures and financing their lifestyles.

While one in ten of men of all ages feels that the pressure of modern living is too much to handle, the anxiety peaks among those aged 25-44 who feel stressed and overworked.

(I resembled those remarks quite a lot a few years ago… still a little bit now. Ah well.)

Blogging and the Academic Job Search

From The Chronicle of Higher Education : Bloggers Need Not Apply

What is it with job seekers who also write blogs? Our recent faculty search at Quaint Old College resulted in a number of bloggers among our semifinalists. Those candidates looked good enough on paper to merit a phone interview, after which they were still being seriously considered for an on-campus interview.

That’s when the committee took a look at their online activity.

In some cases, a Google search of the candidate’s name turned up his or her blog. Other candidates told us about their Web site, even making sure we had the URL so we wouldn’t fail to find it. In one case, a candidate had mentioned it in the cover letter. We felt compelled to follow up in each of those instances, and it turned out to be every bit as eye-opening as a train wreck.

If I head back to grad school, I will take this seriously into account in terms of whether to keep this site live. As long as I’m in IT, I don’t think it matters. Heck, some eccentricity is expected.

10 years ago today…

…Marie and I started dating.

We met online in college, and then in person at the beginning of the Summer of 1995 (after Freshman year.) It’s been a long, strange, and wonderful trip since, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Annoying couplesy picture after the break…

My new transportation/toy…

OK, I’ve been too busy to write much lately. But since I promised to try to work more personal news in here, I’ve got a new scooter. I’ve owned a couple of other two-wheelers in the past (photos and perhaps comments later after the break), but this is my first new one:

The new scooter

It’s an MZ Moskito Classico, a 2-stroke 50cc, sort of a vespa wannabe look.

Overall, I’m not terribly impressed compared to my old Honda Aero 50 — it’s a bit slower, and feels a bit flimsier, but it’s brand new and hopefully will be hassle-free compared to my relatively bad luck reliability-wise with used ones. Anyone know if it will speed up any once it breaks in? Or if there are any relatively easy hop-ups for these?

After a week at the new job…

…all is cool, though I’m trying to do more work and procrastinate less than I was doing at Panta. So far I’m succeeding, so no updates here in a while. I’m annoyingly behind on my political blogs, although my sense of things is that a lot of the big moves are in wait-and-see mode anyway.

No real clear thoughts on the new papal situation yet, although I guess since Ratzinger got chosen later in the week than my last post some comment is due. We’ll see if I come up with something intelligent to say about it. It’s more likely that I won’t; as a non-religious person it’s hard to see what all the fuss was about.
